Vets in Winslow, Buckinghamshire
Windmill Veterinary Centre Ltd describes itself as an independent practice and is accredited as a Silver Status Cat Friendly Practice. Based on available information, it provides routine care (vaccinations, parasite control and pet plans) as well as diagnostics and surgery, and it is listed as offering emergency veterinary services and being a veterinary nurse training facility.
From the latest reviews, owners most often point to practical touches such as follow-up calls after illness, handling nervous dogs without resorting to sedation, and a postal service for regular flea treatments. There is also a serious negative account alleging missed diagnosis and poor continuity of care during an emergency situation; this sits alongside many recent 5-star experiences, so experiences appear mixed depending on the case.

Good. Old-style vets. Not like the big chains filled with apprentices and confused graduates, with crazy price lists.

I have been attending the Windmill vets for just over two years now. On the occasions that I have had to use them, they have been amazing with my dog Belle. I have come from a Bicester vets that said she would need sedating on each visit. Not once has Belle had to be sedated at the Windmill vets . Just patients and understanding was given.

Windmill Veterinary Centre, Winslow have been fantastic in caring and supporting me with my cats and dog. The staff are always welcoming and manage to support me with appointments that suit my busy schedule. Their postal service for flea meds etc helps keep those regular dosages happening on schedule. They were helpful in sharing contact details for puppy training classes etc. We are very happy customers

We have had our rescue dog for nearly a year now and have paid a few visits to Windmill to get her on track with the settlement process - vaccinations - pet plan - extra worming etc. We so far have been very happy with Windmill at a vet service. Recently our girl suffered a bad case of salmonella poisoning and we saw 3 vets in total who were all excellent in their care. We were even called at home the following days as they kept tabs on her. At follow up appointments we have met with Dr Nicola Naylor who has been amazing in discussing how our girl is improving and her ongoing care questions. Alongside taking the time with her in order to build the trust. When we go we don't really feel like it's an appointment, very much a friendly chat about our dogs wellbeing. Thank you all.

Absolutely appalled and disgusted at the way this practice have treated my friends dog, and subsequent treatment of her also. 1 year ago, my friend took her dog to Windmill because he was not eating. Across the course of the next 3 days, he was seen by 5 different vets (no continuity of care) at Windmill. To add insult to injury, my friends dog was given an ultra sound, which failed to see a TENNIS BALL inside Apollo. Instead of checking what could be going on, they gave Apollo an appetite stimulant. Given what we now know to have caused his distress, we are certain this caused a dog with a rapidly deteriorating bowel, intense, excruciating pain. Apollo proceeded to show little interest in food, apart from eating a treat. At this point, Apollo was already suffering for 2 days, and had been seen 4 times by 4 different vets, but all at WINDMILL in Winslow. On the Saturday morning, desperate for help with her clearly ill dog, she begged Windmill to help and see Apollo for a 5th time within 3 days. It was only at this point, they offered an X Ray, and said he had GAS! A vet operated on Apollo at Windmill, whereas in reality, he should have been immediately transferred to an expert veterinary hospital. Pressure was applied to his owner to consent for Apollo to be neutered at the same time. Apollo is not a banned breed, but had been exempted as the government advised. Instead of immediately conducting exploratory surgery, on any of the prior 4 occasions, the vet at this village surgery decided to operate on Apollo himself with the justification it would be cheaper for the owner. This was completely reckless, coupled with performing a neuter before even attending to the critical issue at hand, the TENNIS BALL stuck in his intestines, Apollo was treated without the care owners of other types and breeds would expect. If Apollo had been a Great Dane, a Mastiff, a Spaniel, a doodle, this would not have happened. This practice then expected the owner to carry her own 50kg dog to her car, to transport him without any care plan, to the 24 hour vets a half hour drive away. After much petulant protesting from the vet and the nurse because it was bank holiday weekend, and they stayed late to operate on a dog, it is now clear they lacked the required skill and judgement to do at a village practice, the vet and nurse tugged a dying dog by his collar, put him on a stretcher and loaded him into the back of their van. Apollo arrived at the 24 hour hospital, he went into cardiac arrest on entry, with tachycardia, hypoglycemia, hypothermia due to not being covered during the long transfer, and we now know he had blacked and distended bowels as discovered during the inappropriate surgery. It is clear he had sepsis. Had Windmill correctly identified this dog had been seen 5 times in 3 days, had they listened to his owner, had they spent more time investigating what it could be, not what it wasn't, Apollo might still be here. My friend is devastated at the loss of her beloved dog. She tried to find meaning in the loss of her dog, her 4 year old soul dog, who she had adopted as a puppy to ease her pain due to repeated attempts to start a family, all of which Windmill have been made aware of. She visited Windmill the week of Apollo's death, seeking answers, and to find a way forward, to make sure this never happens again to any owner, to any dog, to ensure vets operate within their expertise only, to ensure the failures in continuity of care would be corrected, to ensure vets feel comfortable advising clients they are not experts in emergency surgery, to redirect the owner to a specialist. The owner asked for mediation but was instead advised to only communicate with the vets insurance company as it would be quicker. 1 year on, the practice still have not agreed corrective actions to remedy, so now I will make it public. I will not listen to another friend have their heart broken through lack of care and accountability by this and other vets. And they still sell TENNIS BALLS on reception. Shame on you Windmill.

I couldn’t recommend these people here enough! I wasn’t registered with them this morning but they saw my bunnies urgently. Fantastic service and staff. Thank you so much!
